Balsamroot Sunflower

Description
For dry, sunny areas. Arrow-shaped silvery green leaves up to 10 inches long. Large daisy-like flowers in spring. Very long taproot. Does not transplant well. Native Americans had many uses for seeds, roots, leaves and stems.
Bitterroot

Succulent fleshy, perennial 1-3 cm tall. Forms beautiful pink flowers. Works well in rock gardens.
Considered a sacred plant by many indigenous tribes.
Brown-eyed Susan

Description
Perennial 20-70cm tall. Yellow petals with orange to red center.
Locally common at low to mid elevations throughout dry climates, arid basins and open forests.
The Okanagan made a solution from this plant which they drank to alleviate kidney problems.
Common White Yarrow

Description
White flowering native yarrow suitable for dry gardens.
Common Yarrow is an erect herbaceous perennial plant that produces one to several stems (0.2 to 1m tall) and has a rhizomatous growth form.
Common yarrow is a drought tolerant species of which there are several different ornamental cultivars.
Golden Aster

Heterotheca villosa is abundant not only in the foothills and
mountains, but also along roadsides.
It needs little
water, often blooms for three or four months, and has a marvelous spicy-sharp sage aroma. The plant
pictured is about seven inches tall and flowers are about a half inch in
diameter.
"Villosa"
is Latin for "hairy".
Goldenrod

2-4 feet tall with bright yellow/gold blossoms August – October. Will tolerate wet or moist soil with full sun or part shade. Commonly found along roadsides, stream banks and ditches with an extensive root system.
Lindley's Aster

Growth Habit: 20-100cm tall. Tall flowering stems emerge from clumping basal leaves. Purplish bluish flowers with yellowish centers.
Ecology: Widespread and common at tow to mid elevations in moist to dry areas. Common in seepage areas.
Long-leaved phlox

Taprooted perennial, 10-40 cm tall. Showy pink to white, fragrant flowers.
Locally common at low to mid elevations in arid central and southern parts of BC. On open rocky places and sagebrush slopes.
Pale Evening Primrose

Ground covering perennial. Flowering from July-fall. Large yellow flowers.
Parsnip-Flowered Buckwheat

Description
Clump forming perennial 10-40cm tall. Creamy colour flowers turning to a russet colour late May persisting through June-July. Provides excellent nectar for honey bees.
Pasture Sage

Growth Habit: Often mat forming, woolly perennial. 10-40cm tall. Shrubby form. Strongly aromatic.
Ecology: Widespread and common at low to mid elevations throughout our grasslands and open arid basins.
Scarlet Gilia

Biennial and short lived perennial. 20-100cm tall. 1-several stems showing, brilliant scarlet, showy tube like flowers.
Common in arid climates and in our hot dry basins along undisturbed roadsides, in Ponderosa forests or open Interior Douglas Fir forests.
Shrubby Penstemon

Description
Evergreen perennial shrub grows to 40cm tall. Spreads laterally in clumps. Great for borders and rock gardens. Blue- purple flowers, bell shaped.
Scattered and locally common at low to sub-alpine elevations, on dry, rocky hillsides, cliffs, and open forests.
Silky Lupine

Description
For sun or part shade. Soft blue and white blossoms on 8 inch flower stalk. Plant grows 1-2 feet high. Leaves hairy and silky. Poisonous to livestock.
Scattered at low elevations on Thompson and Okanagan plateaus. Common in dry grasslands and sagebrush flats.
Snow Buckwheat

White pubescent leaves spread low to the ground on woody stems. Flowers in late summer with white flower stalks. Creates beautiful white mounds.

Climbing, sprawling, aggressive vine for sun or part shade areas. Grows up or out 20 feet, covering anything in it's way. Small white flowers in spring, followed by fluffy seed heads that persist though summer.
